Depression and Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapy

How Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy ( CBH) help me if I am depressed?

The first step is to ask yourself if you are unhealthily depressed in reaction to an event or if you are healthily sad.

  • Do you only see the negative aspects of loss or failure?
  • Do you the think of other losses and failures you have experienced?
  • Do you feel that you can’t help yourself?
  • Do you only see pain and blackness in the future
  • Does everything feel hopeless
  • Do you withdraw into yourself and withdraw from help
  • Do you indulge in unhealthy behaviours such as drinking excessively?

If you answered yes to the majority of the above questions, then you are likely to be unhealthily depressed and Cognitive Behaviour can help you as the depression tends to be the result of unhealthy beliefs.

Once your subconscious unhealthy beliefs are identified, then you can change them and create healthy thoughts feelings and behaviours.

If you are healthily sad you are

  • Able to see positive and negative aspects of loss or failure
  • Less likely to think of other losses or failures than when depressed
  • You are more able to help self
  • Able to look into the future with hope

It is a normal reaction if something bad has happened to be healthily sad and to acknowledge your emotions as a natural reaction to events. Our emotions have a natural time scale individual to each of us. However if you feel you have become stuck in sadness for a long time, it may have become depression and unhealthy beliefs may be responsible therefore CBH can help you.

Features of depression:

  • low mood
  • reduced attention and concentration
  • feeling guilty and worthless
  • lowered self esteem
  • reduced energy
  • feeling the future is just bleak,  leading to hopelessness
  • changes in weight

Depression can be caused by

  • Self blame  (the bad me approach)
  • Self pity      (poor me approach)
  • Other pity  (the poor you approach)
  • Self blame comes from unhealthy beliefs such as “I failed in getting that job so I am a failure so I may as well give up“
  • Self pitying beliefs tend to be in the form of “ I should have got that job, it’s not fair, I can’t stand it, Life is easy for other people”
  • Other pity comes from beliefs such as “The world is a terrible place and bad things should not happen to people”

In CBH These unhealthy beliefs would be challenged and changed  to healthier versions.

CBH is a structured process that involves discovers your subconscious unhealthy beliefs, changes them to healthier beliefs, which results in healthier thoughts, feelings behaviour and symptoms. Unhealthy beliefs are inflexible, unrealistic, don’t make sense and don’t help you to get to your goals. Unhealthy beliefs are usually in the form of musts, should or have to.

Healthy beliefs are flexible, logical, realistic and help you get to your goals.
