Panic attacks and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy
What is Panic?
Panic is defined as an episode of intense fear. It is usually accompanied by unpleasant feelings in the body, and a feeling that something catastrophic is going to happen, leading to a feeling of real danger.
Experiencing a panic attack can be intensely frightening .It can last for a few minutes or longer. However long it lasts it can feel like an eternity to the sufferer.
Stress is usually a factor before the first panic attack
Symptoms that may be experienced during a panic attack. You may experience several of these symptoms
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or feeling faint
- Increased heart rate or pounding heart
- Shaking
- Feeling hot
- Sweating
- Feeling nauseous
- A feeling of unreality
- Numbness
- Tingling sensations
- Chest pains or discomfort
- Fear of dying
- Fear of losing control
Panic attacks can be unexpected
They seem to have no external threat. They seem to come out of the blue. Sometimes even becoming aware of sensations in the body can set off a panic attack, eg. becoming aware of an increased heart rate. With observation triggers can be indentified and treated.
Panic attacks can be caused by situations
They happen in response to some external threat such as being in an enclosed space.
Nocturnal panic attacks
This is when a person wakes up from sleep in a panic and can include feeling an increased heart rate, shortness of breath and feelings of choking.
They can be severe and last for up to 25 minutes.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) can uncover the unhealthy beliefs that are causing the panic attacks
A belief that is often created is “ I must never experience these feelings ever again, as it feels like the end of the world and I can’t stand it”
This unhealthy belief can actually lead to a panic attack, because it puts so much pressure on the sufferer that they are then more likely to experience a panic attack
Therefore it is necessary to challenge that belief and change it to a healthier belief that will prevent further attacks.
Hypnotherapy adds a new powerful dimension in that it can weaken the unhealthy belief and strengthen the healthy belief and installs it in the subconscious.
A minimum of two sessions would be required at a cost of £100 in total. If you require further sessions they are £65 per session or a further block of 2 sessions at a cost of £100 in total
