CBT and Hypnosis

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy CBT (Thinking and Behaviour) is a combination of psychotherapy and behavioural therapy.

Cognitive simply put means thinking , and behaviour explains itself.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is rather like daydreaming. You are conscious and aware but you are not so aware of the outside world. We all daydream occasionally. It is safe, healthy and natural. Hypnosis is safe and we all go into hypnosis every day.

Hypnosis uses a naturally occurring state of mind. The hypnotic state happens normally in everyone when certain physiological and psychological conditions are met. When you employ a properly skilled hypnotherapist it is possible to use this state to make deep and long lasting changes to your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

In hypnosis your conscious mind takes a back seat and your subconscious mind is more accessible. The subconscious mind accepts suggestions more readily. The conscious mind is more analytical and does not accept suggestions so readily so it is important to relax enough so that the conscious takes a back seat.

Clinical Hypnotherapy  is using  techniques to help you into that hypnotic state, where your subconscious mind will accept suggestions that are right for you.

85 % of people will respond to clinical hypnotherapy and can often succeed where other methods have failed.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is based on the principle that we are mostly responsible for our emotions and behaviours.

Your beliefs are held in your subconscious so you are not so aware of them. This therapy discovers your unhealthy beliefs and brings them into conscious awareness. You can then challenge then and ultimately change them to healthy beliefs.

Beliefs that are healthy lead onto healthy thoughts, feelings and behaviour and lead you to being psychologically healthy. Unhealthy beliefs lead  onto unhealthy thoughts, feelings and behaviour and lead onto you being psychologically healthy

Hypnotherapy adds a new dimension as it powerfully integrates your new healthy beliefs into your subconscious and weakens the unhealthy beliefs, making this therapy 70% more effective than Cognitive Behavioural Therapy alone.

It is not the event that causes our emotions, but it is our reaction to the event. The event is the trigger and how we react depends on our beliefs.

This idea is demonstrated here

100 people are asked to do a parachute jump for charity

Possible reactions might be

  • Some may be terrified
  • Some may be excited
  • Some may feel a little concerned that all will go well

The event is the same, but our reactions are caused by our beliefs about the event

Emotions can be healthily negative – we can be healthily concerned about an event

Emotions can be unhealthily negative- we can be anxious about an event

The person who is terrified about the operation may have the belief “ I must have certainty in life” .  This belief restricts life in that with that belief a person would be extremely cautious and never do anything that could not guarantee a high level of certainty. This person would be unhealthily anxious.

The person who is excited may have the belief that they like to have certainty but they don’t demand certainty and this will allow freedom to do more adventurous things in their life. This person would be healthily concerned

The process of Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapy is structured and involves assignments between appointments. This will involve practical work, thinking assignments, written assignments, imagery assignments and behavioural assignments. It is a very pro active therapy.

According to Kirsch , 1995,( Professor of Psychology ) Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy showed 70% better results than with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy alone
